The September 11 attacks led to the perception of Muslims in the Americas as foreign carriers of Eastern religion and a threat to Christian culture. This Islamophobic sentiment extended to policies like barring Muslims from entering the United States. Simultaneously, many Muslims in the East regard the Muslim identity in the Americas as being outside mainstream Islamic thought. This study aims to challenge these views and address the ambiguity surrounding the American and Islamic identities of Muslims in the Americas.
This research employs a descriptive-analytical method grounded in identity theories and historical analyses. It is classified as a scientific study of the history of Muslim civilization in the Americas. The study focuses on Muslims rather than Islam as a religion, thus excluding topics of belief or religious rituals.
Historical evidence reveals that Muslims—whether by force or choice—arrived in the Americas concurrently with Catholic Christians. Also, their contributions to the development of American civilization have shaped the “American” aspect of their Muslim identity, transferring elements of Islamic cultural heritage to the new land. Despite external environmental influences, the deep cultural attachment of American Muslims to Islam remains intact, solidifying their identity as part of the global Ummah. This research paves the way for a more comprehensive Islamic studies through the exploration and study of diverse Muslim American communities, as the experiences and capabilities that American Muslims have gained, during the era of development and modernity, can enrich the studies of Islamic civilization.
